Dustin Hugh Phelan

I would like to apply for the SCUBA Diving and Watersports Instructor position, as well as any opportunities in the field of marine biology. With a background in lifeguarding, dive instruction, research, and adventure tourism management, I am excited about potentially joining your team and bringing my passion for marine life, travel and education together.

Born and raised in South Africa, I developed a connection to nature and water from an early age. After completing my education at well known schools like Pretoria Boys High School and Rhodes University, I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Zoology & Ichthyology,

Following high school, I worked various jobs at home and overseas – from working as a lifeguard in Sun City, to obtaining my PADI Dive Instructor certification in Thailand and subsequently teaching diving in Vietnam. I have gained experience in water safety, instructing, and a passion for travel. After completing my degree, I did a post graduate course in business management at Rhodes Business School to improve my knowledge on small to medium enterprise management, and I taught fellow university students how to SCUBA dive

After university, I gained management experience through roles such as managing restaurants, bars, and a backpackers lodge. These managing experience came in handy when I became co-owner of Kowie Bunga Ocean & River Adventures. Owning an adventure tourism business and leading water based tours equipped me with leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills needed in a dynamic, fast-paced, and ever changing environment.

My commitment to ocean conservation and safety is evident through my volunteer work with the NSRI and my involvement in running scuba diving courses for Outdoor Focus Adventures. Furthermore, my experience collecting data on elephants at Kariega Game Reserve showcases my dedication to environmental research and conservation efforts.
